Myanmar Dispatches Armed Forces to Quell Sectarian Riots
TEMPO Interactive, Yangon:Sectarian riots in Myanmar continued on Sunday as security forces in the west opened fire on rioters that torched hundreds of houses on Saturday.
As reported by government media, the austerity measures were taken to overcome the riots triggered by sectarian tensions that have claimed at least seven lives.
Thousands of Buddhist villagers were forced to flee from their homes on Sunday in response to the violence. Government officials have blamed the Muslim Rohingya community from ‘a neighboring country’ for the incident.
Police and the army have been dispatched to Rakhine state, which shares a border with Bangladesh, in order to end the violence, a government official told AFP.
