Dahlan Denies SOE Privatization Designed to Generate Capital
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Dahlan Iskan has denied allegations that the planned privatization of several SOEs is intended as a means to collect more capital. “SOEs that have gone public are more easily monitored,” said minister Dahlan in Jakarta on Monday. Dahlan added that privatized state enterprises were expected to be more transparent. If the public owns SOE shares, it will be involved in monitoring the performance of those companies, he said. SOEs are currently regarded as companies that are prone to graft practices. “So, we’re not just collecting capital,” said Dahlan. In addition to transparency, Dahlan said that privatization and public offerings were expected to accommodate the growth of the capital market. The former state electricity company director is optimistic that if more companies join the exchange, the Indonesian capital market will grow to become the biggest market in Southeast Asia. SUNDARI
