BI Optimistic about Rupiah Regaining Strength
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Bank Indonesia is optimistic the rupiah exchange rates will regain strength. On Thursday, the rupiah slumped and passed the level of Rp9,600 per US dollar.
“We are optimistic that within a couple of days we will be able to overcome the volatility of rupiah exchange rates,” said central bank governor Darmin Nasution during a meeting with the House of Representatives’ (DPR) Commission XI on Thursday.
Darmin added that the rupiah could be boosted to the level of Rp9.450 per US dollar by utilizing Indonesia’s foreign exchange reserves, which are currently worth US$113 billion. “The wild fluctuations are becoming controllable. We are not worried because we have a significant amount of exchange reserves,” said the governor.
The weakening of exchange rates in various countries was caused by negative sentiment against ongoing economic turmoil in Europe. In order to keep rupiah stable, the central bank will monitor the market to increase the liquidity of the dollar.
