Jakartans Look for Ali Sadikin-Like Figure
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Jakarta residents are looking for a gubernatorial figure similar to that of former Jakarta governor Ali Sadikin, who led the city through times, according to a recent poll by the Indonesian Survey Circle (ISC).
Ali was seen as having played an important role in developing Jakarta’s infrastructure and paving the way for Jakarta’s transformation.
“Ali Sadikin’s figure was respected because he was brave enough to turn Jakarta into a modern city,” LSI communications director Toto Izul Fattah said Sunday.
Toto said the findings were based on a survey conducted by the LSI from May 12-22 with data collected from 440 respondents in Jakarta. Toto said the tendencies were also detailed in the LSI’s public report titled, “Jakarta Public Misses Ali Sadikin Figure,” delivered in Jakarta on Sunday.
According to the results, the public sees Ali Sadikin as a figure who had the courage to transform Jakarta. “They want Jakarta to grow into a global city with a variety of coexisting cultures,” Toto added.
