Importers Required to Absorb People’s Salt by 50 Percent
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:As of the first quarter of this year, salt produced by domestic salt farmers is yet to be utilized by companies. The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry has recorded that the unutilized stock totals 82,000 tons, or 35.9 percent of total salt production. “We suspect the low absorption rate of consumption salt was caused by the hoarding by some traders and market speculators,” said Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sharif Cicip Sutardjo, during a discussion with reporters at his office in Jakarta on Wednesday. Sharif said that some speculators had hoarded leftover salt stocks in order to get a higher price during a bad season. This was due to the fact that salt farmers do not have the storage capacity to keep their salt stocks for long periods of time. ROSALINA
