TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Nunun Nurbaetie, a defendant in the Bank Indonesia graft case, clarified that she went abroad for medical treatments - and not to evade arrest for corruption. The wife of former National Police deputy chief Adang Daradjatun claimed her health had deteriorated gradually, since August 17, 2005 causing extreme pains in her head. Doctors diagnosed her with a neurological disease and she said "I had to take drugs and was dependent on the neurologist, because no matter what, I still want to look my best in public,” she said in her defense statement during the court proceeding held at the Corruption Crime Court in Jakarta, on April 30, 2012. Nunun said her departure to Singapore on February 23, 2010 before she was named a suspect was communicated to KPK (the anti-graft body) and the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore. In the letter signed by her husband, her address in Singapore and the attending hospital were indicated. However she failed to show up when KPK summoned her later as a witness. A year later in February 2011, KPK did name her a suspect and she never returned to Indonesia till her arrest in Thailand on December 7, 2011. Nunun said "I heard that once someone becomes a KPK suspect, you will be tried even without insufficient evidence, and once you become a defendant, you will be convicted. That made me hesitant to return to Indonesia." She also felt that the news in the local media were also increasingly incriminating her. Nunun was indicted for distributing 480 travelers' checks worth Rp 24 billion to a number of House members for the period 1999-2004 after Miranda Swaray Goeltom was elected as Bank Indonesia's Deputy Senior Governor in 2004 through a fit and proper test done at the House. During the last week's proceeding, the prosecuting team headed by M. Rum demanded four years imprisonment and a fine of Rp. 200 million or four months additional confinement (in lieu of the fine) for Nunun. Nunun has been found guilty of giving bribes and facilitating a meeting between Miranda and Senayan politicians at her house in Cipete, South Jakarta. ISMA SAVITRI
