81 Millions Indonesian Workers Are Incompetent, Kadin Says
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The records of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (Kadin) show that currently 81,1 million workers are incompetent and only 20,4 million are competent. Observing this condition, Kadin will form a Kadin Training Center (KTC) with the objective to increase competency of the Indonesian labor force. Chairman of the Kadin's Labor Competency Certification Body Sumarna Abdurahman said that his department has already communicated with 28 industry associations to inventorize the labor industry's needs. KTC is scheduled to began its operations in January 2013. For the first phase, the program will be funded by the regional budget. Afterwards, Kadin will collaborate with World Bank to develop rolling funds for the trainings. “We also will make efforts so that every US$100 paid to foreign workforce each month can be used for the training,” Sumarna said. This year, Kadin and industry associations will prepare competency standards as well as a certification institution for each industry. Sumarna said that in addition to increasing competency, KTC will alsohelp guarantee employment opportunities. “The industry associations guarantee that once trained and certified, workers can get jobs,” he assured.
