Five Die in Aceh Tremor
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) confirmed on Thursday that five people died and seven others were injured after an 8.6-magnitude earthquake struck of the coast of Aceh on Wednesday. Yatim Kulam (70), Fauziah (60), M. Yusuf (70) and Hatijah Hamid (70) died because of a heart attack. “They were shocked when the earthquake hit,” he said on Thursday. Social Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufri said the condition in Aceh and other provinces affected by the tremor had returned to normal. The damage and number of victims are low. “People panicked because of the tsunami trauma. This morning, the situation is now normal,” said Salim. Flights to and from Aceh are running as normal although some airports are damaged. Transportation Ministry’s spokesman Bambang S. Ervan said that only the waiting room at the Sultan Iskandar Muda Airport was damaged. At Simeulue Airport, “The runway and navigation equipment are safe so flight operations have not been impeded,” said Bambang in Jakarta.
