Police Vow to Prevent May 1998 Tragedy from Reoccurring
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Indonesian National Police’s decision to involve the Indonesian National Army (TNI) in securing the protest march against fuel price hikes has raised concerned that the May 1998 riots may reoccur. Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto has requested the public and activists to not worry about such incidents from reoccurring. Rikwanto said the concern that the May 1998 riots may occur again was over the top. The police would never want such an incident to ever take place again and, therefore, would take all necessary precautions to prevent it from happening. “So, don’t worry too much about the possibility that the May 1998 riots will happen again,” Rikwanto told TEMPO on Monday. Rikwanto added that the police and the army do not want to restrict Tuesday’s protest against fuel price hikes. The spokesman said the public has the right to speak their mind over a certain issue. “But, please, do it properly and peacefully,” the spokesman went on. ISTMAN MP
