Book Bomb Mastermind Jailed for 18 Years
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Pepi Fernando, indicted in a terrorism case, has been sentenced to 18 years imprisonment. “He is proven guilty of committig terrorism,” said panel of judge chief, Moestafa, yesterday. The verdict was lower than the prosecutor’s demand of a life sentence.
Judge Moestafa said that Pepi behaved well and was cooperative during the trial and was honest about his actions. “But he did not regret it,” he said.
Pepi was proven to have committed acts of terror, vandalism and public disorder. According to the indictment, this was done with 16 friends that were involved in six terrorism crimes between August 2010 and April 2011.
Among the criminal acts, they assembled the thermos bomb that was intended for President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s entourage. In March 2011, they also assembled a book bomb that was sent to several people, including musician Ahmad Dani, activist Ulil Abshar-Abdalla and the National Narcotics Agency head, Comm. Gen Gories Mere.
They once attacked the Science and Technology Research Center in Tangerang, but failed. Pepi was arrested in Aceh on April 21, 2011.
