Govt Urged to Penalize Polluter Company
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Indonesian Forum for the Environment’s (Walhi) mining and energy campaign manager, Pius Ginting, is urging the environment minister to immediately penalize PT TJS for dumping dangerous and poisonous waste (B3) in Karawang, West Java. “The company is dumping waste illegally in four areas in a 4-hectare former mining area,” he said yesterday. The activity is highly dangerous because it is situated 500 meters from private residences. “There is a water resource and rice fields nearby that support the people’s daily lives,” said Pius. On its official website, PT TJS said its service included the transportation, storage, collection, processing and utilization of B3 waste. Its operation covers Banten, DKI Jakarta, West Java, Centra Java, East Java and Yogyakarta. Pius said the public had reported this to the West Java Police but they had not responded. Therefore, the public approached the National Police’s criminal investigation division. “The public demanded the waste be removed,” he said. DIMAS SIREGAR | MUNAWWAROH | RAHMA TW
