Rp1 Billion for Borobudur Maintenance
TEMPO Interactive, Semarang, Central Java:The Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java, costs Rp1 billion to maintain and restore each year. “This year, much of the funds were used for maintenance due to the ash from the Mount Merapi eruption,” said Marsis Sutopo, head of the Borobudur Heritage Conservation Board, after a meeting with the Central Java Regional Representatives Council’s (DPRD) Commission B on Tuesday. Marsis denied the notion that Borobudur may be removed from UNESCO’s cultural heritage list. “We have checked everywhere, including with UNESCO. There is no such threat,” Marsis continued. Litter around the temple is also being cleared by some 30 additional workers. ROFIUDDIN
