Tornado in Bogor Destroy Nearly 1,000 Houses

TEMPO.CO, Bogor - Bogor Mayor Bima Arya Sugiarto said rain and tornado that hit southern and eastern regions of Bogor City on Thursday afternoon, December 6, destroyed some 800 residences and killed one person.

“As many as 770 units of houses in the southern area and 30 units in eastern areas are destroyed,” said Bima in a statement on Thursday evening, Dec 6.

Earlier, South Bogor Police Chief Comr. Riyanto said there were at least four sub-districts in South Bogor that hit by strong winds. “It occurs in Cipaku, Batutulis, Pamoyanan, and Lawanggintung sub-district that affects several trees fallen and people's houses destroyed,” he said.

Riyanto explained many houses in Cipaku, Batutulis, and Pamoyanan were damaged due to the tornado, while fallen trees occurred in Lawanggintung subdistrict and felt on four cars passing the area. “One driver of Toyota Avanza named Enny Reno (45) died,” he noted.

Tornado also hit Sukaharja Village, Cijeruk sub-district, Bogor Regency, on the same day at 15:00 local times. “Several villages are affected, namely Pasir Tengah, Cijulang, Cipinang Gading, and Pondok Bitung,” said Bogor Resort Police spokesman Ajd. Comr. Ita Puspita on Thursday evening.  

Ita ensured there was no casualty in Bogor Regency. “The team is still collecting data from the field regarding the number of the damaged house due to the incident,” Ita noted.

Following the phenomenon, Mayor Bima Arya instructed Bogor Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) along with Tagana, National Police, and Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) distributed aid reliefs to the victims. The instruction was also sent to all village heads and sub-district heads of the impacted areas to create coordination with Social Agency and BPBD for aid distribution.
