TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Muhammadiyah chairman Ahmad Syafii Ma’arif, known as Buya Syafii, called for its youth members to avoid any potential ruptures breaking out from within the Muhammadiyah Youth organization following the naming of Sunanto as the organization’s new leader.

“I asked them to immediately reconcile if there are true ruptures from within because the new chairman had been appointed,” said Buya Syafii on Sunday, December 2.

Six candidates were presented in the PP Muhammadiyah national meeting (muktamar) held at Yogyakarta on November 26-November 28. There were a number of issues that overshadowed the meeting, from the support shown by the outgoing chairman Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak toward a presidential hopeful up to the intervention by PP Muhammadiyah and the government in the national meeting.

However, responding to the latter, Buya Syafii denied that the meeting was intervened by PP Muhammadiyah nor by the government.

“There was no intervention, but it was an impression to make it seem like that,” he said.

Buya Syafii further hopes that PP Muhammadiyah will not experience any rupture from within the Muhammadiyah Youth organization following the fact that there was one candidate that failed to take the chairman seat at the organization.
