    TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Throughout the age of television programs have been aired, animated series have always been there too. As time passed, this genre spawned the adult animated series sub-genre that tackles on much darker tones and bold issues arguably far distant from being politically correct.

    Here are 5 longest running adult animated TV series aired in the U.S. that has accompanied people’s late-night hours and might have helped some viewers go through life easier. 

    1. The Simpsons (1989 - present)

    The Simpso.

    This American animated sitcom created by Matt Groening is a satirical depiction of working-class life, epitomized by the Simpson family consisting of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. 

    The series was awarded by the Guinness Book of Records as the longest running TV animated sitcom back in 2016. However, the year 2018 marks its 30th season with 649 episodes until December 9, 2018, after it was first aired on December 17, 1989.

    2. Family Guy (1999 - present)

    Family Guy.

    Seth MacFarlane’s animated sitcom was first aired on January 31, 1999, on FOX and eventually has run through the times and saw its seventeenth season being aired on September 30, 2018. 

    The series focuses on the Griffins that live their life through metafictional cutaway gags lampooning American culture. Family Guy was also nominated for the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy.

    3. South Park (1997 - present)

    The brainchild of Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and developed by Brian Graden for the Comedy Central television network, was first aired to the public on August 13, 1997. Since then, South Park has provided ample belly laughs, sorrow, and made us reflect on society’s condition that is what the series’ pokes fun through its profanity and dark, surreal humor. 

    4. Happy Tree Friends (2006 – present)

    The black comedy horror series created by Aubrey Ankrum, Rhode Montijo, and Kenn Navarro, was first introduced to the public through its internet debut back in 1999. However, after the unexpected success of the show, its first TV episode was aired on September 25, 2006, at midnight on the G4 Videogame TV network.

    5. Rick and Morty (2013 – present)

    The modern era adult animated science fiction sitcom juggernaut was first premiered on December 2, 2013. It follows cynical mad scientist Rick Sanchez’ misadventures balanced out with his grandson Morty Smith. The pair split their time between domestic life and interdimensional adventures for an additional 70 episodes for an unknown number of seasons.
