Jokowi Wants Rest Areas on Turnpikes to Sell Local Products

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi has said that rest areas on the nation's turnpikes should be directed to sell the mainstay products of the areas by prioritizing local brands.
Jokowi said he had instructed State-owned Enterprises (BUMN) Minister Rini Soemarno, Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Minister Basuki Hadimuljono and regional heads to select the regional brands for the rest areas.
“This means that those in the rest areas are not the same as they used to be (imported products or brands). But genuinely local brands, regional brands, Indonesian brands,” said President Jokowi when inaugurating the Pejagan-Pemalang (Section 3 and 4 East Brebes-Sewaka) and the Pemalang-Batang (Sewaka-Pemalang Interchange) toll roads in Tegal on Friday, November 9.
The president admitted that sometimes international brands proved quite effective in luring consumers. However, he added, the international brands should not be too dominant so that local products could still thrive.

“Later, it will be discussed with the BUMN Minister, the PUPR Minister, the Mayor of Tegal and the Regent of Tegal. Those entering the rest areas must be selected,” Jokowi said.
In his working visit to Central Java, the president is also slated to submit land sertificates to residents in Tegal. The submission of the certificates is part of the government's committment to furnishing legal certainty to the people for their lands.
The government's move is expected to reduce the frequent land disputes in regions. After Friday prayers, Jokowi and his entourage were scheduled to return to Jakarta.
