UN Secretary and Malaysian PM Plans to Visit Palu

    TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres together with Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad plans to pay visit to the disaster-stricken area of Palu, Central Sulawesi.

    The Indonesian Coordinating Minister of Political, Law, and Security Affairs Wiranto said that the visit by two international figures is to personally monitor areas that were struck by the magnitude 7.4 earthquake and tsunami.

    “The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and PM Mahathir Mohammad plans to visit. Of course, such visits from VVIP guests need to be planned well,” said Wiranto at his office on Tuesday, October 9.

    Furthermore, Wiranto said that the visit from the two men are coincides with the IMF-World Bank annual meeting in Bali. And will use the free-time in between the meeting’s schedule to visit Palu. Wiranto did not reveal the exact date of their visit.

    Wiranto said that figures from other countries have shown interest to visit the area, “It’s the sense of solidarity, they want to see, express their sympathy,” he said.

    Central Sulawesi was hit by a magnitude 7.4 earthquake and tsunami, which killed nearly 2,000 people, injured thousands of others, and destroyed numerous building structures, public facilities, and houses.
