TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two Sumatran elephants trapped in farming areas, Subulussalam City, Aceh Province would be evacuated and relocated using the helicopter owned by Indonesian Air Force (TNI), said the activist coordinator of the forest foundation (YHUA) Zbynek on Sunday, September 30.

The foundation was currently detecting the location of two elephants trapped for a few years back by installing several cameras around the farm.

Zbynek assured the animals would be relocated to its habitats which the team reviewed it as the ideal place for them in Panton region. “Because we find the elephant trace heading to the protected forest,” he added.

During the past week, YHUA team had coordinated with many parties for the mission and met governmental institutions and several environmental care agencies in the region.

The military helicopter that would be used came from Medan City airbase, North Sumatra. “We have contacted the air force in Medan and they allow it but we are still waiting for the Natural Conservation Agency (BKSDA) to issue the official letter,” Zbynek said.

Earlier in April 2018, a Winggo elephant was rescued from mud trap that used to be an old well around Conservation Response Unit (CRU) Alue Kuyun, West Aceh Province. The elephant was successfully pulled out from the mud by another elephant and its mahout from another CRU.

The Natural Conservation Agency (BKSDA) head Sapto Aji Prabowo said the rescue mission went dramatically since the elephants ran out of breath. “Only its head that above the surface,” Sapto said in a statement, April, 10.
