Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo addresses participants during the opening session of the World Economic Forum on ASEAN Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018 in Hanoi, Vietnam. "But rest assured, myself and my fellow Avengers stand ready to prevent Thanos from wiping out half the world's population," he added, to laughter and applause from the audience. Thanos is the villain of the 2018 film "Avengers: Infinity War" who wiped out half of all life in a fictitious universe to solve the problem of limited resources for a growing population. TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Communications and Informatics Ministry acting-head spokesman Ferdinandus Setu does not consider the advertisement on Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in movie cinemas as a form of political campaign.

He argues that the intent of the advertisement is mainly to show the government’s achievements under the leadership of President Jokowi at a controlled environment.

“Just so you know, theater managements does offer space for advertisement prior to showing a movie,” he said.

Ferdinandus also said that the advertisement is not linked to Jokowi’s campaign attempts for the 2019 presidential election candidacy and is more of a public service advert.

“The ministry always attempts to inform the public about the government’s program, policies, activities, and achievements, that are either ongoing or has been introduced,” he said on Wednesday. He further explained that the advert is backed by Law No. 39/2008 and Presidential Decree No. 54/2015.

The Jokowi public service advertisement stole social media’s spotlight after it attracted a critical Tweet from politician Fadli Zon, who suggested that the advert should be taken down.
