Energy Ministry`s Volcanology Center Gets International Award

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry (ESDM) has won an international appreciation, "The 1st Volcano Surveillance and Crisis Management Award".

The ESDM press statement said on Sunday that the award was given to the ministry by International Association of Vulcanology and Chemistry of the Earth`s Interior (IAVCEI).

IAVCEI President Donald Bruce Dingwell handed over the award to Rudy Suhendar, the head of ESDM`s Geology Agency in Naples, Italy, on Friday (Sept 7).

PVMBG became the first volcanology institution in the world to receive the prestigious award from IAVCEI for its achievements in monitoring and handling volcanic crises.

Chairman of the Jury Commission Jacob Lowenstern gave his appreciation to PVMBG which is able to work against the risk of volcanoes, which are spread throughout Indonesia with limited resources.

"Working with limited resources facing the risk of volcanoes in Indonesia, PVMBG has made great progress and must be proud of its achievements," Lowenstern said.

Meanwhile, ESDM Minister Ignasius Jonan also appreciated the achievement made by PVMBG and hoped that in the future it could be further improved.

"I would like to congratulate PVMBG on its achievemewnt. We are very supportive. It is a very proud achievement. This proves that with all the efforts the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has provided the best for the management of natural resources, including protecting the community from geological disasters, especially volcanoes," he said.

The Head of the Geological Agency Rudy Suhendar also gave a great appreciation for the high dedication of PVMBG to continue to protect and serve the Indonesian people.

"Congratulations to colleagues in PVMBG for their world-recognized achievements in protecting the public from volcanic disasters. This award must increase enthusiasm. The task of protecting and serving the community will not stop," he concluded.
