TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - NasDem Chairman Surya Paloh retold his close friendship with Vice President Jusuf Kalla in his speech at the political party’s event held at the Mercure Hotel Ancol, Jakarta, today. He claims that his close bond makes him the only person that has the right
    to rebuke Jusuf Kalla.

“Jusuf Kalla in protocol may be a vice president. But in the next room, he is my best friend. We can talk about nearly anything. We can hold each other’s hand and only the NasDem chairman can lash out at Jusuf Kalla,” said Surya Paloh followed by laughter.

Hearing Surya Paloh’s statement, Jusuf Kalla, who was sitting in the front row immediately broke into laughter and was followed by claps from the audience that were present there.

“If he can scold me, then I can do the same to him. But we would eat together again after that,” Jusuf Kalla responded.

Both Surya Paloh and Jusuf Kalla were Golkar Party higher-ups since 2004. Meanwhile, 2009 saw Jusuf Kalla as Golkar’s chairman while Surya Paloh led the party’s advisory council. But later on in 2011, Surya Paloh broke away from Golkar to establish his own political party NasDem.
