TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya said that the population of online taxis has exceeded its intended quota set by the government. He advised online taxi companies to stop further recruitment processes.
Minister Budi Karya worries that it would reduce drivers’ income if their population continues to climb. “So we have decided to limit its population,” said Budi Karya at the parliamentary complex in Senayan on Tuesday, March 13.
Furthermore, he said that the government has consistently implemented the Transportation Minister’s regulation No. 108/2017 on public transportation, which limits the quota of online taxis. It is aimed at giving an equal opportunity for conventional taxi drivers to compete against online taxis.
The Ministry’s General Director of land transportation Budi Setiadi said the number of online taxi quota suggested by the regional government is limited to 91,953 units, which is not a fixed number that was suggested by 15 provinces.
The Minister of Transportation hopes that online taxi service providers will yield to this law considering that online taxi companies have yet set a quota and is not stopping its recruitment for new drivers.
