Police Chief Calls for National Unity

  • TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police chief Tito Karnavian has underlined the importance of national unity. He conveyed the message during an event dubbed ‘Nusantara Bersatu’ (Unity of the Archipelago) at the National Monument (Monas) area on Wednesday, November 30, 2016.

    “We believe that through unity we can protect Indonesia,” Tito told reporters after the event. The event brought together civil servants, students, military, police personnel and religious communities.

    Tito said that the event was supported by community members. The speakers attending the event prayed and hoped that Indonesia could maintain unity.

    Tito expects that the Nusantara Bersatu can help strengthen Indonesia. He also called on Indonesian people to pray for national unity. “We ask for prayer for all of us to be able protect Indonesia and its diverse culture.”

    According to him, diversity is not an issue for Indonesia. It should instead strengthen the nation to become greater then ever. Tito said that diversity will not divide Indonesia.

    The event was led personally by the National Armed Forces (TNI) commander General Gatot Nurmantyo in Monas. Also present was Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa and Yenny Wahid, daughter of former president Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid. Local celebrities were also seen performing at the event, such as rock band Slank.
