TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia Maroef Sjamsuddin said that the company remained committed to making investment in Papua although the construction of its new smelter would be done in Gresik, East Java.
Maroef also said that investment value in Papua would be bigger than the investment value for constructing the smelter.
Maroef cited the example of the underground mining development that has been done since 2010 until 2014 have used an investment worth around US$4 billion.
It is also planned that Freeport would add investment to develop underground mining worth US$15 billion until 2041.
"Compare it. In Papua, the investment is worth US$19 billion, while in Gresik it is worth US$2.3 billion,” said Maroef.
Maroef further said that the underground mining was planned to produce 3 million tons of copper concentrate in 2021 and as much as 1 ton of copper concentrate would be processed by the smelter owned by PT Smelting Gresik and 2 million tons of copper concentrate would be processed by the smelter to be build in Gresik.
