TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) said he had contacted Constitutional Court chief justice Hamdan Zoelva about the regional elections bill, which was recently passed by the House of Representatives (DPR) on Friday. SBY is attempting to find a legal and valid way to reject the law.
“It’s impossible for me to take actions that violate the law and constitution, which is why I communicate with MK chief (Hamdan),” said SBY on Monday.
SBY said he would keep monitoring the country’s political development after the voting of the law in the DPR. “People want the law to meet their expectation and aspiration. If the DPR and the president issue a law that does not meet the people’s expectation, it’s a mistake,” SBY told reporters on Sunday.
President SBY contacted Hamdan in order to ask more about Law No.20/45, which states in order for a bill to become a law, there must be approval from the DPR and the president.
The regional election law is also rejected by other prominent figures such as Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil as well as several NGOs, including the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS) and the Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW).
