TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The latest data from IQAir, an international apex body monitoring air quality, has ranked the capital city of Jakarta as the most polluted city in the world by scoring 193 on the air quality index on Monday morning due to the PM2.5 concentration reaching 27.4 times over the WHO annual guideline, measuring at 136.9 grams per cubic meter.

According to the analysis from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the searing PM2.5 concentration comes from numerous factors such as emissions and local sources such as transportation, residential, and industrial areas that are located nearby the capital city.

Moreover, the movement of air pollutants is also affected by the wind patterns that move from one location to another which could affect the measurement. Higher air humidity can also affect the amount of PM2.5 concentrated in the air.

Globally, Jakarta leads the IQAir list of cities with the worst air quality over Santiago (175)  and Johannesburg with 158. The website ranks Sedingin Regency located in Riau as the area with the cleanest air in Indonesia by scoring 8 on its index.
